Useful Information

   Shopping

What you can buy

What you can buy – don't leave Egypt without the pharaonic – style statues and papyrus paintings. Watch out for bargains on gold and silver jewellery and of course clothing and cotton goods made with world famous Egyptian cotton. Also notable are the per fume oils in coloured glass bottles and brass work of varied styles. Where you can buy – souks, tourist bazaars and hotel shops provide you with a taste of Egypt. Bargaining with the sellers is expected.

   Entertainment

Check out the folklore shows like the sound and light shows in Cairo, Aswan and Luxor. They are an easy and delightful way to complete your history. Theatres like the Cairo Opera House play periodical shows that you should check out if time permits. The Nile River dinner cruises and oriental coffee shops are a distinctly Egyptian experience. Of course Cairo and most resort cities offer discotheques and casinos for those interested.

  Events

In February / March the excellent Nitaq Festival brings theatre, poetry, music and art to Downtown Cairo. September hosts a vast array of international troupes in the International Experimental Theatre Festival. Also to watch out for in September is the Egyptian / Arabian Horse Fair. In October, the Pharaohs' Rally encourages international 4WD teams to go wild in the desert around the Pyramids. The Arabic Music Festival in early November presents a raft of classical, traditional and orchestral programs at the Opera House. In early December, the Cairo International Film Festival attracts a variety of locals and regional visitors.

   Places of Intrest

The famous Pyramids and Sphinx are a must see, as well as the treasure of the Egyptian Museum. Make a point of seeing lake Nasser; the world's largest artificial lake. The contrast between the enormous body of water and the remote desert surrounding makes Lake Nasser a place of austere beauty. The other worldly White Desert with its bindingly white rock formations is a magical experience to watch out for.

   Sports and Leisure

There are several golf courses around Cairo for those with the passion to hit a few holes. Horse and camel riding at the Pyramids add to the magic of the desert, and snorkelling and diving is available for all sea lovers of different levels of experience. If you're up for it, go ice skating and bowling at one of the several new shopping centres.

   Out and About

Cairo comes alive at night with Nile dinner cruises, Arabic coffee shops, folklore and oriental dance shows, and the Sound and Light Show at the pyramids
